I know that crop sensors are not a popular choice, I wouldn't be surprised if next to no one uses crop sensors here.  Myself, I have Sony gear but my true love is the Fuji.  I just enjoy the portability. That compact lightweight form factor is a quite the deciding factor when I consider the alternative of hauling those huge full frame lenses around.  And the retro Fuji styling has me hooked.  I can't be alone because the new, trendy, (fixed-lens!) Fuji X100vi is back-ordered till who knows when; Fuji is only beginning to clear the backlog of orders.

However...

The Fooj's Achilles heal has been its auto focus.  I am genuinely miffed with the latest firmware upgrade that has introduced more AF issues than it solved.  Continuous AF is now genuinely unusable.

I have a ballroom dance competition to photograph this Saturday and I was counting on trying its "pre shot es" feature (buffers up to 20 pics, prior to pressing the shutter down, to write to the card when you shoot burst mode).  Now I am back to my Sony.

Fuji's inept AF is a constant hinderance.

For the Fuji users and the idly curious, here is a video describing the issue.  Cheers and carry on.

I have been a Fuji user for many years and never had a problem with updating to the latest firmware.

However over the last couple of years Fuji seem to have had a problem with some of their updates for some reason. So I have stopped downloading the latest firmware from them and will wait until others have found no problem or Fuji have issued an update to the update. A shame as it never used to be like this.

I use cropped sensor cameras. Never had a problem.

Admission: I know nothing about Fuji cameras.

If portability is a factor then consider mirrorless. My full-frame mirrorless Canon RP is smaller and lighter than my previous crop-sensor Canon 60D.

What AF mode are you using and is subject detection in the mix?

Canon R8 weighs nothing, AF is incredible.

Or consider adding one of the crop frame Sonys (a6700) and the brilliant Sigma crop frame prime lenses?

I've had issues with Fujifilm and switched back to Canon - but the issues I had were nothing to do with the cameras being crop sensor or the autofocus.  Actually, my X-T2 was incredible in terms of it's autofocus.  Combined with the Fuji 100-400 Lens it made for an amazing wildlife camera.  And that was a camera already a model behind when I bought it.

The Sony A 6700 is a true powerhouse with a 26MP sensor and is an option as Huw states. Personally I only use full-frame for portraiture (Canon R5 & R6 MKII) although Ive got a Canon R10 being delivered today as a holiday walk around camera purely to save weight and bulk but have familiar controls and menus.

Email Fuji and see what advice they can provide it maybe something simple.

I'm not a Fuji user I moved back from MF to FF with Sony A7Riva, gave away my Panasonic bridge camera and just plugged that gap with a Sony A7cR, what a fab dinky camera. However, this move has not been without it's challenges and discovering how to get the best out of Sony. Firstly, in the menu, remove image preview as this stops down the light, use quality wide aperture glass, don't be afraid to increase iso a tad. The beauty of this camera is that it shoots 26mp in apsc mode, weighs about 500g. I'm sure having a mess about in your camera menu will provide a solution to the dilemma. Using a small aperture lens in a darkish/shadowy room is probably the problem.

I understand that this is a bug with the latest firmware update, with continuous AF. I've never had any problems with focus with any of my Fuji cameras since I started using them in 2015, but I generally use single AF.
I also NEVER do a firmware or OS upgrade on my camera/phone/computer etc until at least 3 months after release, so that I can see whether the release has issues, which happens with all camera/phone/computer/gadget manufacturers. You become cautious like that if you work in the IT industry!

Canon 7 series cameras. Crop sensors.  Primary use runners and cyclists, secondary wildlife.  Also fine for stationary people.

The 6D is nice as well, of course.  ("full frame").

I have owned Fuji cameras since buying X-pro 1 in 2014. At present I own X Pro1, XT1, XT3 and XT5 (!!?). I have always used single point focus on the eye for portraits/model photography and in general I have not relied on autofocus for wildlife/sports subjects. From the very start with the XT5 I was not happy with AI face/eye detect. It did not give consistent results and when I switched off AI face/eye and reverted to manually locating the eye with single point focus I got much more consistent results.

With AI autofocus the problem is that during the live photography event/shoot the camera tells you in the view finder that it is focusing on the subject with the green box(es) but when you process the images after the shoot, you discover it has missed focus in a lot of frames - this was just with the original XT5 firmware and the new update has probably muddied the waters, if the various Youtube commentators are to be believed.

Firstly I think a great many people use crop, APS-C sensors, they are a pretty popular choice.

You appear to have a fair amount of 'gear' if you have both Sony and Fuji, with incompatible lens mounts so more gear.

If as it is proving the Sony is the better system to use for a particular job, well that's the kit to use.

Maybe me but I prefer to be in control of the focus so not a fan of any AI options, but one reads they are ( can be) great.

I've got Canon (FF) and Fuji, I like and enjoy both in a 'horses for courses' way.

Yes, as all ( as far as I know) "updates" are non reversible- you can never go back to an earlier version,  occasionally "updates" have had to be issued which did exactly that , so eg 1.04 could actually be 1.02-again- because 1.03 had been a problem.

Nothing wrong with a cropped sensor.

If you can cope with the Sony user interface - which you can - I'd go all Sony.
